Somewhere in the Pacific Ocean, new land is forming. Composed completely of garbage and weighing more than 3.5 million tons, this floating island is fed by ocean currents from around the world. The island has existed for decades and now spans an area twice the size of Texas, reflecting a world unequipped for managing its waste.
Like the garbage island, Live Debris brings trash from a variety of world
currents. Taking place in Beirut Lebanon March-June, 2008 as a series of lectures,
workshops and exhibitions, Live Debris presents international innovation in
art and design created from commonly discarded materials. From the hills and
shanties of Cairo and Rio de Janeiro, the catwalks of the United States, the
villas of Latin America and the streets of Spain and Lebanon, Live Debris
highlights programs and individuals who are transforming their communities
through the creative revival of common trash.
With the confluence of international reuse art and design, new ground is forming. As reuse innovators from around the world continue to share ideas, we find that our discards can be increasingly used as a resource, both material and social. If we learn to respect our trash, it becomes hard to find anything devoid of value. Live Debris aims to instill value in our discards so that what was once the burden becomes the solution. What was rejected is embraced. And what once lay dead is finally reborn. It is live.
